Before you go
Check the tide table: the causeway floods two hours either side of high water.
Pack a red torch, layers and a flask. The ridge is colder than the harbour by five degrees.
Tell the warden's office when you expect to be back.
The ridge path
The path climbs 180 metres from the car park in about forty minutes.
Keep to the marked stones after the second gate; the heather hides old drainage cuts.
The dome sits behind the last cairn and is lit dim red after sunset.
At the dome
Volunteers run the 40 cm reflector from 20:00 on clear nights.
Let your eyes adapt for twenty minutes before you look; phones go in the box by the door.
Ask for the Andromeda galaxy in autumn and the Orion nebula in winter.
Coming back
Walk down in a group and keep torches pointed at the ground.
The last bus leaves the harbour at 23:40; the warden can call a taxi.
